Mahonia is an holly, evergreen ornamental shrub 1 m high and 2 m wide. Mahonia's leaves are similar to holly leaves: large dark green shiny and prickly at the edges. In winter, they take on a burgundy-lilac hue. The racemose inflorescences of fragrant yellow flowers bloom in March-April. In August, dark blue fruits with a bluish bloom appear in their place.

Mahonia does not require special care. Prefers light, humus-rich soil and a warm, sunny place. The plant also grows well in the shade and is suitable for planting under trees. In a harsh winter, shoots can freeze slightly, but after pruning they quickly recover. Mahonia is very decorative throughout the year, therefore it enjoys well-deserved popularity.
